Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu

Overview

Trek from lodge to lodge following the ancient Salkantay Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. During this 63km journey, marvel at the beauty of the Andean mountains, deep valleys and snow-capped peaks. Learn about the cultures of the Andean families who maintain age old traditions and be inspired by the majestic surroundings, as you follow in the footsteps of the Incas. At the end of each day enjoy Peruvian cuisine and overnights in comfortable lodges.

Itinerary

DAY 1: CUSCO – SALKANTAY
Depart from Cusco and drive to Marcoccasa, before trekking on the “Camino Real” route. Two nights at SALKANTAY LODGE. (L, D)

DAY 2: HIKE TO HUMANTAY LAKE
Hike on the slopes to Lake Humantay, fed by the hanging glaciers of Mount Humantay, before returning to the lodge. (B, L, D)

DAY 3: CROSSING THE SALKANTAY PASS
Hike up the Rio Blanco Valley, circling Humantay Peak, before descending for one night to WAYRA LODGE. (B, L, D)

DAY 4: DESCENDING INTO THE CLOUD FOREST
Embark on a trek which descends along the banks of the Salkantay River through verdant scenery. Overnight at COLLPA LODGE. (B, L, D)

DAY 5: FOLLOWING THE SANTA TERESA RIVER VALLEY
Hike along the Santa Teresa valley, through rural areas passing by orchards and coffee plantations on the “Llactapata Inca Trail.” Two nights at LUCMA LODGE. (B, L, D)

DAY 6: FIRST VIEWS OF MACHU PICCHU FROM LLACTAPATA PASS
The last day of your trek ascends to Llactapata Pass, where you will need to have your camera ready for spectacular views of Machu Picchu. (B, L, D)

DAY 7: VISIT MACHU PICCHU
Today you will enjoy a guided tour of the enigmatic ruins of Machu Picchu, before boarding the train to Ollantaytambo, where on arrival you will be taken to Cusco by road. (B, L)
