El Chalten & Monte Fitz Roy

Overview

The colourful village of El Chalten overlooks the stunning northern sector of Los Glaciares National Park and is the base for exploring the majestic and World renowned Fitz Roy Massif. Just 220km from El Calafate by road, El Chalten is considered “the” place for hiking in Argentine Patagonia. There is a wide choice of hikes taking you deep into the impressive surrounding mountains of Fitz Roy, Laguna de los Tres and Laguna Torre.

Itinerary

DAY 1: EL CALAFATE – EL CHALTEN
Today, you will depart by bus for the 3 hour journey to El Chalten, passing by Rio La Leona where you will enjoy one of the oldest and typical Patagonian hostels. (A pre night in El Calafate is essential, but not included).

DAY 2: EL CHALTEN
This morning, depart El Chalten on the Fitz Roy trek and ascend to the Vueltas River Viewpoint. From here you will see the “U” shape valley below that has been carved by glaciers. Ascend to the Fitz Roy massif where you will have panoramic views of Saint Exupery, Poincenot, Fitz Roy, Mermoz and Guillaumet. Pass through beautiful lenga forests to Laguna de los Tres, following the trail to Sucia Lagoon. (B, L)

DAY 3: EL CHALTEN – EL CALAFATE
Today you will start your walk along the Laguna Madre e Hija until you reach the Cerro Torre viewpoint, which offers stunning views of Torre Glacier. In the late afternoon, walk back to El Chalten and take the bus back to El Calafate, where the tour ends. (B, L)
