El Chalten & Monte Fitzroy

Overview

The colourful village of El Chalten overlooks the stunning northern sector of Los Glaciares National Park and is the base for exploring the majestic and World renowned Fitz Roy Massif. Just 220km from El Calafate by road, El Chalten is considered “the” place for hiking in Argentine Patagonia. There is a wide choice of hikes taking you deep into the impressive surrounding mountains of Fitz Roy, Laguna de los Tres and Laguna Torre.

Itinerary

DAY 1: EL CALAFATE – EL CHALTEN

Today, you will depart by bus for the 3 hour journey to El Chalten, passing by Rio La Leona where you will enjoy one of the oldest and typical Patagonian hostels. (A pre night in El Calafate is essential, but not included).

DAY 2: EL CHALTEN

Begin your day with a guided hike towards the Laguna Torre trail. Walk through beautiful lenga forests and river valleys until you reach the Cerro Torre viewpoint, known for its stunning views of the Torre Glacier and the iconic granite spire. (B)

DAY 3: EL CHALTEN – EL CALAFATE

This morning, depart El Chaltén for one of Patagonia’s most iconic hikes, the Laguna de los Tres Fitz Roy Trek. The trail begins at the end of San Martín Avenue and ascends gradually through breathtaking landscapes, offering panoramic views over the De las Vueltas River valley and the dramatic Fitz Roy massif. Following the Río Blanco valley, you will enjoy impressive vistas of the Piedras Blancas Glacier before continuing past Río Blanco Camp and tackling the final ascent to Laguna de los Tres. From the lake, take in spectacular close-up views of Cerro Fitz Roy, one of the most striking peaks in the Patagonian Andes. (B)

DAY 4: EL CHALTEN – EL CALAFATE

This morning is at your leisure. Relax in town or enjoy a gentle walk, before your private transfer back to El Calafate, where your journey will end. (B)
