Houseboats of Kerala

Kettuvallam Houseboats

The Kettuvallam (houseboat unique to Kerala) is a large traditional country boat that has a thatched roof over a wooden hull. They were traditionally used to ship rice, spices and other goods between the backwaters and Kochi Port. Kerala houseboats are a major tourist attraction, cruising the backwaters of Kerala. Kerala offers a unique opportunity to experience the breathtakingly beautiful backwaters which consist of a complex network of brackish lagoons, lovely lakes and canals. Houseboats in Kerala have a three member crew – a chef, driver and cabin assistant. The houseboats offer comfortable accommodation with private facilities and air conditioning.
