Where to Find the Snow Leopard
Camouflaging with the craggy cliffside and melting into the icy mountainside, snow leopards are some of the most elusive creatures in the world. Often called the “ghost of the mountains”, these striking big cats are found in the Himalayan Mountains and Central Asia and lead a solitary lifestyle. They prefer a habitat of rocky ledges, cliff faces and valleys to provide camouflage and cover, and are usually found at very high altitudes (between 3000-4500m). With their habitat thought to cover around 2 million square kilometres in 12 countries, it is no wonder these creatures are almost mystical.
About
Dotted with black rosettes and cloaked in a thick grey coat, the snow leopard is a striking presence in the high mountains of Central Asia. Perfectly adapted to its harsh environment, it uses its long, powerful tail for balance and its wide, fur-covered paws to move effortlessly across fresh snow. It is also extremely agile, able to leap as far as 15 metres and as high as 6 metres, running as fast as 65km/h, navigating steep, rocky terrain with ease. As an apex predator, it plays a vital role in the ecosystem, yet it faces growing threats.
Conservation Efforts
It is estimated that there are as few as 4,000 snow leopards are left in the wild. Whilst they have recently been changed from an endangered to vulnerable status in 2017, these elusive animals still face the threat of prey depletion, habitat loss, trafficking, hunting, climate change and retaliatory killing (for attacking livestock). It is essential that conservation efforts continue as snow leopards play a key role in maintain the ecological balance and biodiversity of these regions.
