History

Born from a passion and respect for vintage locomotives, Rovos Rail has been operating for 30 years, with its first successful Pretoria–Cape Town run occurring in 1989. The passion project of Rohan Vos, Rovos Rail has emerged triumphantly from humble beginnings. With the support of his wife, Vos went about purchasing the first Rovos coaches in 1985. Over the years, Vos’ family holidays would come to be centred on seeking out hidden gems in old rail yards to add to the Rovos collection.

With their first run only transporting four passengers, Rovos Rail has evolved over the past 30 years into a renowned train operator.  Step back in time as you board these lovingly restored trains.

Cape Town

Explore incredible South Africa over 3 days before disembarking in Cape Town. This 1,600km journey winds through the desolate landscape of the Great Karoo, the grasslands of the Highveld as well as the picturesque winelands.

Victoria Falls

Departing from the Rovos Rail Station in Pretoria, this 4-day journey takes in the sights of South Africa and Zimbabwe such as Nylstroom and Hwange National Park, before reaching the breathtaking Victoria Falls.

Namibia Safari

Over 9 days, discover the savannahs of the Highveld, the humbling Fish River Canyon and the scorched earth of the Kalahari Desert. Enjoy a tour of Windhoek, explore Sossusvlei and witness the incredible biodiversity of Etosha National Park on a game drive. Terminating in Walvis Bay, this is a great way to get a taste of South Africa and Namibia.

Aboard the Train

With a maximum of 72 guests per journey, Rovos Rail ensures an intimate luxury experience. The guest suite cars, lounge car, observation car and two dining cars are all decorated in elegant colonial style, reminiscent of a bygone era.

Aboard the train, enjoy gourmet cuisine that has an emphasis on locally sourced produce. Indulge in paired wines with your meal, before retiring to the lounge car to relax.
