Ecotourism Accommodation in Africa

African Travel Specialist and MD Richard Ruskin, is committed to making a difference to the places we visit and promote. The philosophy is to ensure the economic, social and environmental benefits are maximised whilst cost to the destination is minimised.  Read on and learn about 5 lodges that we think are a great examples of Ecotourism in Africa…

Chobe Bakwena Lodge

Situated on the banks of the Chobe River, this lodge is not only stunning but grounded in principles of eco-conservation. Bakwena has a motto of “treading lightly upon the earth” that echoes throughout the property with a strong emphasis on sustainable and locally sourced materials.  The traditional rondavel style of construction is conducive to staying warm in winter and cool in summer made from eco-friendly sandbags. The property will not use chemicals that are harmful to the environment and will only use Solar energy.  Furthermore, keep an eye out for the decorative pieces that make this lodge unique.

Chobe Bakwena Lodge leads the way in demonstrating that luxury does not have to be compromised when it comes to being environmentally conscious.

Mombo Camp

The Moremi Game Reserve is home to Mombo Camp.  This is an area well known for its big cat population. This luxury camp is situated 2 metres above ground and features 9 tented suites. It offers breathtaking views as well as actively working to limit its environmental impact.

Taking a multifaceted approach to eco-conservation, the camp works to contribute to the local community, culture, commerce and conservation. By giving back to these “4Cs”, Mombo Camp aims to create both a luxurious and sustainable experience. You also have the chance to learn more about this approach in their Wilderness Safaris 4Cs Centre.

Chikwenya

The luxurious Chikwenya is situated on its own concession in the Mana Pools National Park.  The site boasting spectacular views of the Zambezi River.  Relax in tented suites spread across an elevated boardwalk. Promoting both a sustainable and immersive safari experience, Chikwenya allows you to escape the confines of modern technology. This means no television, hairdryers, air-conditioning or Wi-Fi …

Another Wilderness Safaris camp, Chikwenya also follows the 4Cs ethos of respecting and contributing to local community, culture, conservation and commerce. The camp operates with a minimal eco-footprint.  It also incorporates many aspects of local art and culture.

Pamushana Lodge

Located in the Malilangwe Game Reserve in Zimbabwe, Pamushana Lodge is the perfect base from which to view endangered species such as black rhino and wild dog and admire an incredible array of birdlife. This virtually untouched wilderness makes for truly unique game viewing. The six villas are stylishly decorated with traditional Shangaan fabrics and artefacts.  Their position overlooks rocky outcrops and the lake below.

Offering support for the Child Feeding Program, the Black Rhino rehabilitation program and the Kambako Museum, Pamushana encourages a holistic approach to conservation of wildlife and preservation of culture and community.

Bisate Lodge

The Bisate Lodge is the perfect place to begin your incredible gorilla trek. Situated next to the Volcanoes National Park, this eco-lodge maximises guest comfort whilst still maintaining strong environmentally sensitive principles. Bisate focuses on two main goals: reforestation and rehabilitation. You can contribute to both of these aims by gaining an understanding of the wildlife and plant life that inhabits this area, as well as actively contributing through the tree-planting program. Bisate has planted more than 20,000 indigenous trees on the site.  The intention is to eventually mimic the natural vegetation zones of the volcanic area.

Africa is one of the most spectacular destinations on Earth and it is important we keep it that way. Lodges that have a strong focus on conservation of wildlife, the environment and local community are vital in the preservation of this great continent. These are just five of our favourite eco-lodges, but there are so many to choose from, depending on your destination, budget and itinerary…
