Cape Town “Must Do’s”

Cape Town is one of South Africa’s most stunning cities. This port city is located on the southwest coast of South Africa. From the waterfront precinct to the flat-topped Table Mountain. From the historic Robben Island to the stunning coastline, there are so many great things to do in Cape Town.  Read on to discover our Cape Town top 5 “Must do’s”…

Table Mountain

Officially one of the “New 7 Wonders of Nature”, Table Mountain is a sight to behold from any angle. The best way to truly experience the mountain in all its glory is to take a cable car ride to the top.  Here you can witness the incredible 360° views of Cape Town from 3,500ft above the city. If you’re an adrenalin junkie, then abseiling back down is certainly the way to go. However, descending from such great heights is not to be taken lightly so be sure to do your research well before booking. Contact us if you need some recommendations.

When you’re at the top of the mountain as well as enjoying the spectacular view, why not enjoy a meal and a glass of wine  or coffee and cake at the Table Mountain Café.

Robben Island

One of South Africa’s most visited historical sites, Robben Island is a place of great symbolism. The island itself is symbolic of both centuries of oppression as well as triumph of freedom and democracy.

Robben Island was used as a convict station from as early as the 1600’s.  As the years went by, it became a place where political prisoners and “undesirables” were banished. Transforming into an asylum for the mentally ill in the early 1800’s, Robben Island soon became a prison again in the 1960’s. During apartheid many Black people were kept on Robben Island as political prisoners. The most famous of those political prisoners being anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician and philanthropist, Nelson Mandela.

Visiting Robben Island whilst in Cape Town is a must.  With a fascinating and very moving history, there is a lot to discover. You can reach Robben Island by ferry from the V&A Waterfront, which takes approximately 30 minutes to an hour depending on the ferry.

Boulders Beach

Home to thousands of African penguins, Boulders beach is the most visited of all of Cape Town’s beaches. The beach is part of the Table Mountain National Park Marine Protected Area. This means the areas is protected, the beaches are kept safe and clean and the penguins are protected.

While penguins are Boulder’s main attraction, the beach itself is a family friendly swimming beach where as well as climbing on the rocks; you can also enjoy a leisurely picnic. Be sure to dispose of your rubbish properly to ensure the safety of the penguins and longevity of a safe and clean beach.

Kirstenbosch National Botanic Garden

Kirstenbosch is made up of 36 hectares of breath taking flora with a reputation for being one of the most beautiful and important botanical gardens in the world. Established in 1913, the Botanic Garden features over 7,000 species of plants from Southern Africa. You will also find a range of other gardens including a fragrance garden, sculpture garden, medicinal garden and many more. Furthermore, there is a spectacular tree canopy walkway, where you can walk amongst the trees and experience the gardens from above. With so much to explore, the Kirstenbosch National Botanic Garden is the perfect excursion for kids and adults alike.

Cape Winelands

The two best regions in Cape Winelands (in our opinion of course!) are Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

Stellenbosch boasts beauty in vast measures with oak tree lined streets featuring elegant Cape Dutch and Victorian architecture. In addition to its beauty, Stellenbosch is full of museums, beautiful hotels, quaint bars and amazing restaurants.  Stellenbosch is home to Stellenbosch University, a world-class education institute.

Franschhoek holds a rich French heritage, from its wine to its food; its 300-year-old French heritage is still alive and well today. Featuring Cape Dutch architecture and luscious vineyards, the atmosphere of Franschhoek is unlike any other wine region. In addition to having many of South Africa’s top restaurants, Franschhoek is also home to exceptional art galleries.
